support for Euro currency sign in OpenVMS

Updated: July 28, 1999

The OpenVMS environment supports the new Euro currency sign with 8-bit-character-based solutions.

[Euro Sign] These solutions, based on a character set named ISO Latin_1 Euro, are a subset of the standards produced and approved by the ISO standard committee to define the new, ISO Latin_9, 8-bit character set that supports the Euro currency sign.

We recommend that customers evaluate their own systems and applications to understand the scope and impact that the introduction of the new Euro sign will have on their environment.

For details on OpenVMS Euro support, refer to the following FAQ:

When will OpenVMS support the Euro sign?

OpenVMS supports the Euro sign now!

Note that for full Euro support in your overall environment, peripherals such as printers and terminals require firmware updates, and applications may need new font support.

What versions of OpenVMS support the Euro sign?

OpenVMS Versions 5.5-2 (VAX only), 6.2, 7.1 and higher support the Euro currency sign.

What kits must I install to support Euro on OpenVMS?

The Euro sign passes correctly through the underlying operating system without any modifications to the OpenVMS base software. Therefore, no kits are required for the base operating system.

However, the following products that run on OpenVMS must be updated:

» DEC C Run-Time Library (CRTL)
» DECwindows Motif for OpenVMS
» PATHWORKS 32 V7.1A

Kits are available now.

You may also need firmware updates for peripherals such as printers and terminals.

What must I do to get my printer to print the Euro?

You need new fonts that support the Euro. Contact your printer vendor for details.

I have an old, unsupported terminal. Will it understand the Euro?

No. If your terminal displays ISO Latin_1 or another of the former ISO Latin character sets, the Euro sign in text files will display as the international currency sign instead of the Euro.

I have a supported terminal. Will it understand the Euro?

Yes, but you need ISO Latin_9 or ISO Latin_1 rev. 204 fonts. Contact your terminal vendor for details.

Where can I find more information on the Euro currency sign?
