Archive Backup System (ABS) for HP OpenVMS

Data center administrators face major storage management problems on a daily basis. The complexity associated with manual system backup and restoration, effective file archiving, file retrieval, and manual media management all add up to more than half the cost of storage ownership. HP Archive Backup System (ABS) for HP OpenVMS automates these activities with a full range of functions. ABS supports HP OpenVMS, Windows, and UNIX clients.

ABS takes advantage of the mission-critical capabilities of HP OpenVMS by allowing the HP OpenVMS system to be the data and backup server for your network. ABS includes scheduling, cataloging, and media management services to enable the automation of backups and archives.

Strategy and support

The ABS product will be actively enhanced and supported well into the future for HP OpenVMS on VAX, AlphaServer systems, and Integrity servers. Features will be restricted to the AlphaServer and Integrity Server systems architectures, and will be focused on the areas of performance and improved capabilities in larger backup/restoration environments. Support for the majority of new tape libraries, support of new versions of HP OpenVMS, and problem fixes will be provided. The latest roadmaps for ABS can be found on the HP OpenVMS rolling roadmaps presentation page.

For a current list of ABS supported tape libraries, see the support matrix.

Training and consulting

The HP customer support center offers a three-day ABS version 4 training class at their facility in Colorado Springs, Colorado, at regular intervals. Contact an ABS technical support team member at +1 (800) 633-3600 for scheduling and enrollment information. Your technical account manager or HP OpenVMS ambassador can help you obtain more information as well. When you call, be sure to ask about pricing and availability of the following ABS training options:
  • ABS classes held at your site
  • Online seminars covering specific subject manner
  • Customized classes for your site held in Colorado Springs
  • SLS to ABS migration training
