EMC NetWorker Module for Oracle now available for OpenVMS

EMC NetWorker now has an Oracle module for OpenVMS that supports both Oracle and Oracle Rdb. The client has been extended to include support for ODS-5 and features radically improved performance. Both are available NOW!

NetWorker delivers reliable and complete protection of highly available OpenVMS systems in SCSI-based direct-attached storage (DAS) environments and fibre-based storage area network (SAN) environments.

NetWorker running on OpenVMS provides:

  • Centrally managed backup and recovery to tape or disk
  • Integration into heterogeneous storage environments
  • Support for heterogeneous storage environments
  • Automated backup scheduling and advanced media and device management
  • LAN-free online backup of Oracle 8i/9i and Rdb for automated protection and increased application availability

The benefits of NetWorker Module for Oracle

With NetWorker Module for Oracle, OpenVMS users can standardize on one application for:
  • Fast, reliable data protection
  • Less management overhead
  • Greater return on investment (ROI) for storage resources

The NetWorker OpenVMS Oracle 8i/9i module is fully integrated with Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN) to provide automated, highly reliable protection and fast, granular recovery while maintaining Oracle availability.

The NetWorker OpenVMS Module is fully integrated with the Rdb Management Utility (RMU) to provide automated, highly reliable protection, and fast, granular recovery while maintaining Rdb availability.

NetWorker evaluation software for OpenVMS

NetWorker evaluation software for OpenVMS is now available with everything you need to run a NetWorker environment for 45 days. To get the latest version of NetWorker for OpenVMS, go to the software evaluation page of the EMC website and use the Search by Platform drop-down menu to select OpenVMS for Alpha (Client & Storage Node), OpenVMS for Integrity (Client & Storage Node), or OpenVMS on VAX (Client Only).

NetWorker support for OpenVMS

The NetWorker Client for OpenVMS enables network backup of OpenVMS systems, including smaller OpenVMS systems. The NetWorker Storage Node for OpenVMS allows OpenVMS systems to write data to direct-attached or SAN-attached backup devices at least as fast as OpenVMS Backup. Storage Node also allows an OpenVMS system to provide backup services to network clients of any platform.

In addition to traditional backup, it is often necessary, for regulatory reasons, to archive data for long periods. NetWorker Client and Storage Node support archival operations, in addition to backup, on AlphaServer systems and Integrity servers. NetWorker on OpenVMS offers full support for critical OpenVMS features such as OpenVMS Cluster environments, co-existence with OpenVMS Shelving, and full support for the ODS-2 and ODS-5 file system—including the ability to accommodate all file semantics, access controls, file types, file versions, and directory structures. Both products also make the full capabilities of NetWorker available on OpenVMS systems.

The NetWorker Module for Oracle on OpenVMS uses the Oracle SBT V2.0 API. This means that EMC supports the back up of Oracle 8i, 9i, 10g, and Rdb 7.1.2.1.0 (or later) databases, and can back them up online, enabling organizations to meet modern Service Level Agreements (SLAs). The Oracle module uses standard Oracle or Rdb backup scripts that do not require major modifications to run effectively. The scripts can be client-initiated, or NetWorker server-initiated; NetWorker accepts the stream of data being pushed by the database, and writes it to the backup device.
